The point spread is essentially a handicap towards the underdog. The wager becomes ’Will the favorite win by more than the point spread?’ The point spread can be moved to any level to create an equal number of participants on each side of the wager. This allows a bookmaker to act as a market maker by accepting wagers on both sides of the spread. The bookmaker charges a commission, or vigorish, and acts as the counterparty for each participant. As long as the total amount wagered on each side is roughly equal, the bookmaker is unconcerned with the actual outcome; profits instead come from the commissions.
Because the spread is intended to create an equal number of wagers on either side, the implied probability is 50% for both sides of the wager. To profit, the bookmaker must pay one side (or both sides) less than this notional amount. In practice, spreads may be perceived as slightly favoring one side, and bookmakers often revise their odds to manage their event risk.
One important assumption is that to be credited with a win, either team only needs to win by the minimum of the rules of the game, without regard to the margin of victory. This implies that teams in a winning position will not necessarily try to extend their margin—and more importantly, each team is only playing to win rather than to beat the point spread. This assumption does not necessarily hold in all situations. For example, at the end of a season, the total points scored by a team can affect future events such as playoff seeding and positioning for the amateur draft, and teams may ’run up’ the score in such situations. A teaser is a bet that alters the spread in the gambler’s favor by a predetermined margin – in American football the teaser margin is often six points. For example, if the line is 3.5 points and bettors want to place a teaser bet on the underdog, they take 9.5 points instead; a teaser bet on the favorite would mean that the gambler takes 2.5 points instead of having to give the 3.5. In return for the additional points, the payout if the gambler wins is less than even money, or the gambler must wager on more than one event and both events must win. In the United Kingdom, sports spread betting became popular in the late 1980s by offering an alternative form of sports wagering to traditional fixed odds, or fixed-risk, betting. With fixed odds betting, a gambler places a fixed-risk stake on stated fractional or decimal odds on the outcome of a sporting event that would give a known return for that outcome occurring or a known loss if that outcome doesn’t occur (the initial stake). In addition to the spread bet, a very common ’side bet’ on an event is the total (commonly called the over/under or O/U) bet. This is a bet on the total number of points scored by both teams. Suppose team A is playing team B and the total is set at 44.5 points. If the final score is team A 24, team B 17, the total is 41 and bettors who took the under will win. If the final score is team A 30, team B 31, the total is 61 and bettors who took the over will win. The total is popular because it allows gamblers to bet on their overall perception of the game (e.g., a high-scoring offensive show or a defensive battle) without needing to pick the actual winner.
In the UK, these bets are sometimes called spread bets, but rather than a simple win/loss, the bet pays more or less depending on how far from the spread the final result is.
Example: In a football match the bookmaker believes that 12 or 13 corners will occur, thus the spread is set at 12–13.
*A gambler believes that there will be more than 13 corners, and ’buys’ at £25 a point at 13.
*If the number of corners is 16, the gambler wins (16–13) = 3 x £25.
*If the number of corners is 10, the gambler loses (13–10) = 3 x £25.
*A ’sell’ transaction is similar except that it is made against the bottom value of the spread.
*Often ’live pricing’ changes the spread during the course of an event, increasing a profit or minimizing a loss.
In North American sports betting many of these wagers would be classified as over-under (or, more commonly today, total) bets rather than spread bets. However, these are for one side or another of a total only, and do not increase the amount won or lost as the actual moves away from the bookmaker’s prediction. Instead, over-under or total bets are handled much like point-spread bets on a team, with the usual 10/11 (4.55%) commission applied. Many Nevada sports books allow these bets in parlays, just like team point spread bets. This makes it possible to bet, for instance, team A and the over, and be paid if bothteam A ’covers’ the point spread (wins by that amount or more)
andthe total score is higher than the book’s prediction.

*the trading is off-exchange, with the contract existing directly between the market-making company and the client, rather than exchange-cleared, and is thus subject to a lower level of regulation.
Financial spread betting is a way to speculate on financial markets in the same way as trading a number of derivatives. In particular, the financial derivative Contract for difference (CFD) mirrors the spread bet in many ways. In fact, a number of financial derivative trading companies offer both financial spread bets and CFDs in parallel using the same trading platform.
Unlike fixed-odds betting, the amount won or lost can be unlimited as there is no single stake to limit any loss. However, it is usually possible to negotiate limits with the bookmaker:
*A stop loss or stop automatically closes the bet if the spread moves against the gambler by a specified amount.

Spread betting has moved outside the ambit of sport and financial markets (that is, those dealing solely with share, bonds and derivatives), to cover a wide range of markets, such as house prices.[5] By paying attention to the external factors, such as weather and time of day, those who are betting using a point spread can be better prepared when it comes to obtaining a favorable outcome. Additionally, by avoiding the favourite-longshot bias, where the expected returns on bets placed at shorter odds exceed that of bets placed at the longer odds, and not betting with one’s favorite team, but rather with the team that has been shown to be better when playing in a specific weather condition and time of day, the possibility of arriving at a positive outcome is increased.Tax treatment[edit]
In the UK and some other European countries the profit from spread betting is free from tax. The tax authorities of these countries designate financial spread betting as gambling and not investing, meaning it is free from capital gains tax and stamp duty, despite the fact that it is regulated as a financial product by the Financial Conduct Authority in the UK. Most traders are also not liable for income tax unless they rely solely on their profits from financial spread betting to support themselves. The popularity of financial spread betting in the UK and some other European countries, compared to trading other speculative financial instruments such as CFDs and futures is partly due to this tax advantage. However, this also means any losses cannot be offset against future earnings for tax calculations.
Conversely, in most other countries financial spread betting income is considered taxable. For example, the Australian Tax Office issued a decision in March 2010 saying ’Yes, the gains from financial spread betting are assessable income under section 6-5 or section 15-15 of the ITAA 1997’.[6] Similarly, any losses on the spread betting contracts are deductible. Suppose Lloyds Bank is trading on the market at 410p bid, and 411p offer. A spread-betting company is also offering 410-411p. We use cash bets with no definite expiry, or ’rolling daily bets’ as they are referred to by the spread betting companies.
If I think the share price is going to go up, I might bet £10 a point (i.e., £10 per penny the shares moves) at 411p. We use the offer price since I am ’buying’ the share (betting on its increase). Note that my total loss (if Lloyds Bank went to 0p) could be up to £4110, so this is as risky as buying 1000 of the shares normally.

One of the first books I read about Texas holdem was co-written by Phil Hellmuth, and it was titled Play Poker Like the Pros.
He has a top 10 starting hands list that consists of any pair of 7s or higher, along with ace-king and ace-queen.
He suggests that if you’re new to the game, you play super-tight and limit yourself to these hands.
So, obviously, pocket pairs are important pre-flop in Texas holdem.
But how do you play them?
You start by subcategorizing these hands:
*Huge pairs – aces or kings
*Big pairs – any pair of 10s, jacks, or queens
*Medium pairs – any pair of 7s, 8s, or 9s

It’s hard to lose money when you have a pair of kings or a pair of aces pre-flop in Texas holdem. These hands can often win unimproved. It doesn’t matter what kind of game you’re in – passive or aggressive, loose or tight, huge pairs practically play themselves.

Big pairs are still great hands, but not as great as aces or kings, obviously.

The only time you wouldn’t re-raise with a big pair like this is if you’re acting after multiple raisers and re-raisers. In that case, you should consider the possibility that your opponent is ahead.
The correct play here gets trickier. It might make sense to call a raise and a re-raise here if you know the other players’ tendencies and see what happens on the flop. If you’re against a tight player, it might make sense to just fold in the race of multiple raises.

If you can reduce your competition to just a couple of people, these pairs play well – but mostly if those players are loose and probably have weaker hands than you do.
If you can get into a pot with 5+ other players, you have an opportunity to win big on the occasions when you flop a set. With 5 players in the pot with you, someone almost always has a pair, and they’ll usually play it aggressively.Playing a medium pair depends a lot on your position.
Limping from early position is appropriate, and raising from late position is also appropriate, but only if you’re trying to thin the competition. If multiple players have already limped, you should limp to so that you can get more people in the pot.
This hand is strong enough that you can afford to call a single raiser and try to hit a set on the flop, but you need to be ready to fold if you don’t – especially against tough opponents.

It’s hard to win a hand with a small pair unless it improves on the flop, turn, or river. The profits from this category of hand come from the occasional sets and full houses.
Your goal should be to get into the hand as cheaply as possible and with as many opponents as possible.
If the game is loose enough, you’d be justified calling a raise pre-flop, although multiple raisers and re-raisers are trouble. Position matters a lot when playing in person or at online casinos.
Some players are going to put a lot of money into the pot regardless of what happens on the later rounds, so even if you can’t get into the pot with 5+ players, these are playable hands.
Just don’t overplay small pairs. And be ready to let go of them when you miss the flop.

Suited cards are cards of the same suit. They can be great hands, mediocre hands, or lousy hands, depending on the ranks of the suited cards.How to Play Suited Broadway Cards
The strongest suited cards are the broadway cards. These include the ace with a king, queen, jack, or ten. This category also includes king-queen suited and king-jack suited.
You can win multiple ways with this category of starting hands. The most common way you’ll win with these cards is when you hit a big pair with a strong kicker. You can also often hit a flush with a big card.These hands are similar to the big and huge pairs – they’re great to play regardless of the game conditions.
Instead of automatically raising with these cards as you would with the big pairs, though, you should usually only raise if you’re the first one in the pot. If you have raisers in front of you, let your opponent’s tendencies guide your decision. Against a loose player, call. Against a tight player, at least consider folding.
Even though these are strong hands, they’re still drawing hands. You won’t often win unless your hand improves on the flop, turn, or river.

But not all suited broadway cards are premium starting hands like the big ones listed above.
Queen-jack suited, king-ten suited, queen-ten suited, and jack-ten suited are also broadway cards, but they’re considerably weaker. They’re harder to win with because it’s easier for your opponent to have a stronger hand.
Your goal is to win against weak opponents or to hit a really big hand and win a large pot with a lot of opponents. You’ll win those pots when you hit your occasional straights and flushes.
These are good hands to limp in with, and you can raise with them in late position if everyone in front of you limped.

If someone raises, though, make sure you can get multiple players into the pot with you before calling. It won’t usually be profitable to get heads-up with a small suited broadway hand.

Big-little suited hands are any suited ace with a 9 or lower or any suited king with a 9 or lower.

But even if you pair the king, you have a lot to fear when an ace shows up on one of the later rounds.

Regardless of which suited connector you’re looking at, it’s a hand that needs to hit hard on the flop to bet worth continuing with. In other words, you want to get in before the flop for a minimal investment and with multiple opponents.You should only play suited connectors from later position.
Otherwise, suited connectors aren’t really worth playing pre-flop.

You have 169 possible starting hands in Texas holdem, which means that I’m recommending you only play the top 39% of the possible starting hands.
But this doesn’t mean you should always play any of these hands. Often these hands aren’t strong enough to play if someone has bet or raised in front of you.

However, a rule used by many casinos is that a player is not allowed to draw five consecutive cards from the deck. In this case, if a player wishes to replace all five of their cards, that player is given four of them in turn, the other players are given their draws, and then the dealer returns to that player to give the fifth replacement card; if no other player draws it is necessary to deal a burn card first.
Another common house rule is that the bottom card of the deck is never given as a replacement, to avoid the possibility of someone who might have seen it during the deal using that information. If the deck is depleted during the draw before all players have received their replacements, the last players can receive cards chosen randomly from among those discarded by previous players. WHAT SHOULD YOU PLAY FOR? This is a question I receive from friends all the time. If you’re catering towards a casual audience that includes your relatives and co-workers that know little about college basketball then $5 is probably your best bet. If you’re more into the college basketball scene and want to weed out that co-worker that knows nothing from winning your pool and embarrassing you, then $20 might be best to scare away the pretenders.
Not into gambling for money? That’s cool, there are plenty of other ways you can gamble in an NCAA Tournament pool besides putting your hard-earned dollars on the line. Maybe bet some push-ups and sit-ups since beach season is approaching (you should probably do them anyway, that Holiday weight is still gripping those love handles), or a lunch or dinner, or tickets to a game next season. You can always get creative when it comes to bragging rights after beating everyone in a bracket pool.
WHAT SHOULD THE SCORING SYSTEM BE? Some pools feature straight scoring for most overall correct picks — one point per game, all games — or the standard escalating points that doubles for each round.
Some have even gotten creative with the escalating points system over the years and changed around the numbers to reflect more importance on certain rounds.
I prefer the escalating points that double for each round:
Round of 64: 1 point
Round of 32: 2 points
Sweet 16: 4 points
Elite Eight: 8 points
Final Four: 16 points
Title Game: 32 points
This is the easiest way to escalate scoring with casual fans while also fairly giving people who predicted champions or Final Four teams a fair shake if they have a poor first-round showing.
Want a unique tiebreaker besides picking the final score of the title game? Force people to get their picks in on Tuesday before the First Four games in Dayton and make each of those games worth 1/2 of a point. With those four games, that’s two potential bonus points given to people who put their bracket in early and then you don’t have to text them an hour before tip-off on Thursday asking for their picks.

SHOULD YOU ALLOW PEOPLE TO BUY-IN WITH MULTIPLE BRACKETS? No.
Never.
People that enter multiple brackets — besides joke entries like mascot brackets — are people who you shouldn’t associate with. Period. These are the same people who sandbag your evening plans by waffling on which restaurant to go to or which movie to see. They can’t make decisions so they waste everyone’s time. This is America’s event and you should be overconfident to a fault with your single bracket like everyone else.
HOW SHOULD YOU SEND THE INITIAL EMAIL/WELCOME LETTER? NCAA Tournament pools have reached such epic proportions that half the time it feels like you have no idea which pool you’re even entering. If you’re running a pool, take a second to introduce yourself and what you and your pool are about before you demand total strangers to send $20 over Paypal or Chase Quickpay.
Put a contact email address or phone number, maybe even a Twitter handle. Explain when people can expect payouts, how they’ll receive payouts and what the payout breakdown will be. Tell people when they can expect scoring updates or any other vital messages.
